Gigi Fenster’s PhD proposal was an unusual one – she would induce a fever in herself. She hoped that this self-induced fever would help her break free from rationality and make her life a work of art. What followed was three years of research into fever-  its history, its uses in medicine, and its relationship with her Jewish identity. Gigi’s second book, Feverish was born out of this PhD research. In this session, Gigi will discuss a few particular chapters in the history of fever, focusing on those that impacted on Jewish lives. She will also consider recent reports linking orthodox Jews with measles outbreaks, and how these mirror historic events in New York.
